The practice of watching whales in their natural environment is known as Whale watching. Whales are usually watched for recreation but sometimes they are observed for scientific or educational purposes.

Whale watching has become a very popular recreational activity with a study showing that nearly 13 million people went on whale watching, the world over, in 2008. Whale watching is one among the tourist attractions in Australia, South Africa, Colombia, Norway, Spain and Canary Islands.

There are many exciting things that you can do or see in various parts of the world, with Whale watching being one of the most common activities that tourists love to engage in. It is fun to do it and there are many nations across the globe whom are earning some good revenue from these activities. Australia has come out to be a strong player in this sector as there are many areas around the country where you can enjoy whale watching.

Stevensons Falls Logo and Images

Stevensons Falls

Otway National Park, Hordern Vale VIC 3238

Stevenson's Falls The walking track, which has recently been re-opened, begins at the campground and meanders along the edge of the Gellibrand River to the day visitor area. From here the walking track crosses the river and heads through the stands of Douglas Fir Trees. It then heads down to the edge of the river into indigenous riparian vegetation where you can hear the distant roar of the falls. The walking track ends at a newly constructed viewing platform at the base of Stevenson's Falls.

There is a short, easy walk from the day visitors area to the falls. At the end of the walk there is a viewing platform for people wanting a better view of the falls.

The road in is easy and in good weather suitable for all vehicles, however it does narrow so care should be taken when proceeding around bends. In wetter weather I recommend that All wheel drive vehicles be used as there are portions of the track that can be very slippery.

Fort Lytton National Park

South Street, Dummy Suburb ACT 9000

Fort Lytton is one of several coastal fortifications built along Australia's coast in the 19th century to safeguard shipping lanes and ports from possible enemy raids.

From 1881 until the 1930s, Fort Lytton was Brisbane's front line of defence and is regarded as the birthplace of Queensland's military history. Regular training camps in military warfare were a highlight of Queensland's political and social calendar.

This classic example of a coastal fortress was surrounded by a water-filled moat, and its heavy armaments were concealed behind grassy ramparts connected by underground passages. After World War II, the fort had outlived its usefulness and fell into disrepair until petroleum refining company Ampol took over the site in 1963. The fort became a national park in 1988 which today protects this important link with our military past.

We often see Humpback Whales performing “Spy Hops”. Spy hopping is when the whale rises in a vertical movement straight up out of the water head first.

Humpback whales spy hop to get a better view of where they are or to look at the people on a whale watching vessel. Whale Watch AustraliaThey really do like to look at us as much as we like to look at them. A spy hop right in front of Imagine is a wonderful experience.

It is a special moment that you get to look at a Humpback Whale while it is looking at you.Humpback whales have very good vision so most spy hops don’t bring the whales eye out of the water but they are looking at you from underneath the water. In clear water the whales body is also visible underneath the water so the whale’s head will slowly rise above the water, sometimes to a great height, it will hold that position and then slowly sink back below the water.

The whale is able to hold it’s position above the water not by swimming but by using it’s natural buoyancy and positioning it’s pectoral fins. When this happens close to Imagine it is very impressive, you are looking at one of the world’s largest creatures while it is looking at you saying Hello!

Come and join us and experience one of the worlds most incredible animal migrations.  Whale Watching Byron Bay will take you right up to the humpback whales with the amazing Byron Bay landscape as a backdrop.

Humpback whales, dolphins, turtles and a variety of amazing sea birds await you on a tour with Whale Watching Byron Bay, Byron Bay’s original and most unique whale watching experience.

Whale Watching Byron Bay is the only whale watching tour operator departing directly from Byron Bay . This allows us the quickest access to the Humpback whale migration on the Australian east coast.

Whale Watching Byron Bay has been operating since 2002 making us Byron Bay’s most experienced whale watching tour operator.  Over the years we have developed a tour that will provide you with a safe, informative and rewarding experience.

We conduct small personalised interpretive tours with a maximum of only 12 whale watchers per vessel.  Tours are conducted on purpose built RIB vessels designed for unobstructed viewing of the whales.  Each vessel is annually inspected by the NSW Maritime Authority to ensure it complies with all current safety regulations.

The unique geography of Byron Bay’s Cape Byron allows us to pin point each whale’s location, therefore Whale Watching Byron Bay’s tours often encounter whales within minutes of departing Byron Bay.

Take in some of the best sights the East Coast has to offer. Learn about local history, aboriginal history, the lighthouse, dolphins, whales and turtles. See the Most Easterly Point of the Australian mainland. This is all part of your Byron Bay sea kayak experience with Cape Byron Kayaks.

See and learn these things and more while you paddle in your sea kayak around the famous Byron Bay marine reserve.

May to November is the season to get up close and personal with whales as they migrate past the most easterly point of the Australian mainland Byron Bay.

Cape Byron Kayaks have been operating sea kayak tours for the past 17years and every year the anticipation of Whale Season is almost too much to bear as there is no other experience quite as unique and exhilarating as sea kayaking alongside a whale.

During their northern migration, most whales come within 3 km of the NSW coast. During the southern migration Humpback whales bring their calves into the calm waters surrounding Cape Byron to rest and feed. The calves are very inquisitive and playful, they often approach our sea kayak tours with the mother at their side passing just meters from our kayaks. Check out our video in the gallery... you have to see it to believe it!
