La Trobe's Cottage was Victoria's first Government House. It was the home to Charles Joseph La Trobe, his wife Sophie and their children from 1839 to 1854. He arrived as Superintendent of the Port Phillip district of New South Wales and became Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria in 1851. The cottage has been relocated from its original site at Jolimont but contains many pieces which belonged to La Trobe and his family. Charles La Trobe was responsible for many of the key cultural aspects of Melbourne - its library, university, museum, hospital and extensive parklands but it was only in 2006 that a statue was erected to acknowledge his legacy. Combined Tours of La Trobe's Cottage and Government House are also available. The tours provide a tangible link between the pre-gold rush and Marvellous Melbourne, giving a fascinating insight into the contract between the two properties and the eras they represent. Although still a working residence today, Government House tours may include the grand State Rooms, the Billiard Room and a visit 'below stairs' to the old kitchens and mews. Booking is required. Please note, Government House tours run most Mondays and Thursdays from 10am starting at La Trobe's Cottage, and are only available to groups of 4 or more.
