Book Direct with the Owner at Capitol Theatre with Attractions in Melbourne City, for all your Attraction and travel needs.
An extraordinary cinema, with ceilings indirectly lit in four colours, the Capitol Theatre was designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin.
The cinema opened in 1924, and the dramatic lighting was used in conjunction with the orchestral scores during the early silent film era. It added drama for the filmgoer, and remains a spectacular sight today.
Unfortunately, movies are now only rarely screened at this iconic cinema. The fabulous site was bought by RMIT University in 1999, and a refurbishment program is under way.
The theatre seats 600 and is currently used for lectures, festivals and events for both RMIT and the Melbourne public.
