Completed in 1872, it was Australia's first telegraphic link to Britain through the colonial telegraph system. The discovery of gold by a linesman in 1925 quickly led to the establishment of the Tennant Creek township. By 1935 a post office had been opened, which led to the closure of the telegraph station and ended an era of hospitality for travellers to the outback.
