St Helens Point conservation area features extensive sand dunes, located in north-east Tasmania. Popular for surfing, fishing, beach walks, boating and bird-watching, the area also has good camping sites. The sand dunes and ocean beach of St Helens Point are a short drive from the township of St Helens. The sand dunes can be damaged by foot and vehicles therefore vehicle-use is restricted to a specific area at Peron Dunes. Notice the native grass, Spinifex hirsutus, which plays an important role in stabilising the dunes and allowing complex plant communities to develop. There are a number of good walks at St Helens Point and certain sections where it is permissible to use dune buggies. You can enjoy fresh water year-round at Onion Creek and marvel at the ocean views as you look out towards St Helens Island. Various walks take you past outcrops of rocks and offer beautiful views of fishing harbours and sweeping beaches. St Helens Point also has wheelchair access and toilet facilities. While you are in the area, visit Binalong Bay, a small holiday resort town well known for its rock and beaching fishing. St Helens Point is about 2 hours' drive (170 kilometres/105 miles) from Launceston.
