Awesome experience to visit an outback cattle station and see the real outback - one of the most eye opening day trips I have ever done - and a lot of it was due to Dan Smolenaers ( Dan the man with the van !) - his knowledge ,passion and great stories made the day a very special day for everyone on the tour
We had John and Lucy for this tour and they were absolutely fantastic. Hands down the best tour guides we've had out of all our tours. They had so much energy, so much information and most importantly were very aware about our well being as the heat was quite unbearable. They made it clear from the start that they were open to having the tour modified if we ever felt sick or exhaustion from the heat and that our health was the top priority, even if it meant stopping the tour early. This was so appreciated, especially since that morning we did an Uluru base walk in the heat. The smallness of the tour groups really helped make it a better experience. We had 5 people in total for our tour and that meant it was a lot more intimate and we were all able to get to know each other very well. The salt lake was marvelous and so was driving around Curtin Springs station and learning about how the station operates. We were taken to various vantage points were we could take some great pictures of Mt Conner, and was even taken to a secret place by John where we could take a very artistic picture of the mountain. The dinner at Curtin Springs station was delicious, with my highlight definitely being the steak and chips that we had for main. Not many people know about this tour but this tour is a must for anyone visiting the Red Centre!
This tour is available from Yulara or Curtin Springs. We chose the pickup from Curtin Springs as this is where we were staying. Our whole experience with Seit was most professional. Thank you Mike for your very interesting commentary and anecdotes. We enjoyed the visit to the salt lake and seeing the critters. It was great to get as close as we did to Mount Connor and see the changing colours at sunset while sipping on our Bubbly and savouring the home-made dips and crackers. The three-course dinner at Curtin Springs was a fitting finale to a most enjoyable afternoon and evening. Thank you to the staff in the booking office and to our driver and tour-guide Mike.
The tour is basically a long drive in a packed van. The two guides spent more time taking pictures of each other than attending to passengers. You are taken out onto a rough old dirt road where the van drives at high rates of speed and you bounce up and down in the back. There are no restroom stops for the ladies for several hours and when my 75 year old mom asked for a toilet break she was told to use the bushes. There was no real information given just old wives tales. The tour concluded at the cattle station where you are served a cheap previously frozen diner style breakfast steak with cold chips and a beer. The guides were given huge thick juicy steaks at the same table as us. The people who were savy just booked the tour from the station and bought their own diner. They paid less than half of what the all inclusive ticket cost but at least they ended up with a nice t-bone steak. The guides had insufficient water for the trip and people were left parched and thirsty. We had to buy our own $8 bottled water at the dinner. All in all it’s your best bet to travel to the station on your own. It’s on a public road and there is no entry fee. Showers, camping, and restrooms are provided free of charge. This tour DOES NOT take you to Mt Connor. The closest you will ever be is about 5 miles away. Don’t make the mistake we did. Go on your own. You will get nothing from this tour. The photo attached shows the closest we ever got to the mtn.
We did this trip on Sunday. What a great experience from the lovely person at the ticket office (think her name was Emma) to our absolutely fantastic driver and guide Mike. Mike taking us to experience this magnificent piece of pioneering history on such a personal level was amazing. We were lucky enough to share the front seat with Mike who is like a walking encyclopaedia on the area. Nothing was too much trouble stopping to show us things of interest along the way. Our final stop on the day was Curtin Springs where we got to share a meal and then meet the 92 year old owner Peter. Mike thanks for accomodating us and giving us such a memorable experience. Truely amazing.
Rick is awesome. Very knowledgeable and very passionate about what he does. We did this tour that felt unlike any tourist experience ever, it was more like a mate showing us about the cattle station. Then to have the impressive Attila (Mount Connor) as the back drop to the day, wow. Small group tours are great and ours only had 4 people on it to make it even more intimate. It was the honeymoon tour, we even waltzed on the salt flat. Great day. Thanks Rick
